What’s the story behind your nickname?
ANNETTE: pronounced 👉Ah Net 👈 The last e is silent. 😳🤔Ok? Please let me explain.
I’m Puerto Rican and we speak Spanish. Spanish is a phonetic language. Not a memory language like English is. In English (which is not phonetically constructed) what you pronounce is based upon the rules that you remember. For example : enough (f sound is the ending) and through ( oo sound is the ending). Someone who speaks Spanish and no English would pronounce them like this:
Enough:Enoougoha
Through:teheoougoha
They would end the same way, because what you see is what you say.
In Spanish, what you see you pronounce. For example.:piña-pronounced pinya, ñ is one of the letters of our alphabet pronounced : enye . Every time you see ñ it’s going to be produced the same way.
Also in Spanish we have 👉’👈 accents. Accents are symbols that let you know which letter gets the emphasis of the sound when you pronounce something. It also gives you the timing. For example José: pronounced Hoezay. The e gets the most emphasis
So when my family on mainland Puerto Rico first saw my name written the called me Ahnete.
Also Spanish in my family is spoken very quickly ; 8 syllables in a sentence. So for my family to stop and think of how to pronounce my name when talking to me or telling me about anything just did not fit. Too much time would pass to keep to the 8 syllables per sentence.
Also because they thought every letter should be produced, they decided the the closest pronunciation of my name that could be respectful yet be similar would be Anè. This way everything get pronounced and they can keep to the 8 syllables per sentence.
My nickname is Ané: pronounced 👉Ahknay👈. Thanks for reading. 🙏 🥰
